There are a huge number of web sites, apps, and online communities dedicated to helping people live healthier lives in various ways. Are these sites actually helping? How similar are they to one another? What kinds of support do each offer?
We performed a preliminary analysis of the spectrum of available online “health social machines” – web sites that use input from people to help other people – to answer these questions, and postulate ways that such sites might better support individuals’ pursuits of well-being.
